Dr Scandura is a physician-scientist developing new therapies for myeloid hematopoietic malignancies. He was originally trained as an electrical and biomedical engineer and caries this rigorous training to studies defining the mechanisms of normal hematopoiesis that are perturbed during neoplastic transformation. During his Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Scandura defined a mechanism by which TGFβ induces growth arrest in normal human hematopoietic stem cells--work published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the basis of his first grants from the National Cancer Institute and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Currently, in collaboration with other faculty members in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Dr. Scandura is developing translational research related to leukemogensis. He is investigating the subtle perturbations of how hematopoietic stem cell function contributes to malignant phenotypes such as acute leukemia. His work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Oncogene, and Genes Chromosomes Cancer.
