Dr Sandra Sapia joined Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q) in September 2017 as Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Medical Education Division. Before joining WCM-Q, she served as Consultant Hematopathologist and Assistant Professor at Örebro University Hospital in Sweden.   

Dr Sapia received her M.D. degree with honours from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine and completed her post-graduate training in pathology and her fellowship in hematopathology in Argentina. She is board certified and licensed to practice in Argentina, Spain, the UK, and Sweden. Her career has been primarily devoted to clinical care but always encompassing research and teaching as an indivisible unit. Although never left the practice of general histopathology and cytopathology she focused mainly in hematopathology. The product of her scholarship is reflected in more than 30 years of service centred on diagnostics, pre-and post-graduate teaching, and pharma-oriented research. She has been Head of Pathology Department in two different hospitals in Argentina, board member, hematopathologist and flow analyst at Interpflow Corporation, USA (2005-2008) and Director of Hematopathology Department at Vivia Biotech, SL Spain, involved in pharma research (flow cytometry based) of hematological malignancies and autoimmune diseases. 

Dr. Sapia has published 23 articles, three book chapters, and several abstracts. She is a founding member of the River Plate Flow Cytometry Society (Argentina-Uruguay) and was elected president in 2002. Her involvement in pharma research in Europe evolved in a patent on a personalized medicine test for hematological neoplasms. Once back to clinical care, she continued having an active role in multidisciplinary teams, scientific societies, and working groups. In that capacity, she collaborated in writing guidelines for clinical management in pathology chapters and as a lecturer in post graduate courses. 

Finally, Dr Sapia is passionate in the pre-graduate education of healthcare professionals serving as Clinical Assistant Professor in Buenos Aires University School of Medicine (Argentina), in the Biotechnology Department University of Alicante (Spain) and lately in at Örebro University School of Medicine in Sweden.
