My lab focuses on understanding how nutrition and caloric intake impact brain function and brain energy use. We use state-of-the-art multiphoton imaging, electrophysiology, and oxygen sensing to measure neuronal activity and ATP use, both in vitro (primary neuronal cell line and brain slices) and in vivo (awake, head-fixed mice). Our investigations are complemented with big data analysis, biophysical modelling, multi-omic approaches, and collaborative fMRI studies in humans. The overarching goal of the lab is to elucidate the cellular/molecular mechanisms underpinning cognitive decline in obesity and type 2 diabetes, and to identify therapeutic targets for improving cognitive function in neurological disorders.
