Surgical education in the United States has made monumental advancements since its origination in the eighteenth-century colonial period and continues to evolve today. It is important to recognize the key elements that define surgical training and identify novel methods that accommodate the learning style of the current trainee demographics. This article discusses the modern principles of surgical education and provides educators with strategies to create an effective learning environment for the current generation of learning and practicing surgeons.
