Dietrich Büsselberg   Professor of Physiology and Biophysics

Dr. Dietrich Büsselberg (Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, Associate Dean for Admissions) joined Weill Cornell Medicine - Qatar (WCM-Q) in January 2010. Prior to joining WCM-Q, he served as Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience at Texas Tech University, Health Science Center, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine.

Dr. Büsselberg holds a State Exam for Teaching from the University of Hannover, Germany (1981) a B.S and M.S. from University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany (1987) and a Ph.D. from the University of Hohenheim (Germany), Institute of Zoology in collaboration with the University of Albany (U.S.), School of Public Health (1989). In 1995, he received a habilitation and venia legendi for Physiology from the Heinrich-Heine University of Düsseldorf Medical School.

Following his formal education, he served as substitute for the Chair of Physiology at the University of Essen, Institute of Physiology; as Assistant Professor (Priv.-Doz.) at the University of Göttingen, Institute of Physiology; and as Associate Professor (Apl. Professor) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Institute of Physiology.

research overview

  • Since 1989 Dr. Büsselberg has been involved in research and teaching in Germany, and USA (University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany; Wadsworth Center for Research, Albany USA; Johannes Guttenberg University Mainz, Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany; University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany; University of Göttingen, Germany).

Dr. Büsselberg describes his research as actively involved in (neuro-) physiology with specific interests in the field of (neuro-) physiology/(neuro-) pharmacology, cancer research and cell signaling, using molecular and electrophysiological approaches as well as cellular imaging techniques. Currently, he and his team have delved into the area of cancer therapeutics and screening of anti-cancer drugs in breast cancer, neuroblastomas, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer, identifying the link between diabetes and cancer risk and progression, understanding the modulation of intracellular calcium signaling in cancer cells exposed to chemotherapy and mechanisms of chemoresistance in cancer cells.

Prof. Dr. Dietrich Büsselberg has over 30 years of expertise in the interaction of substances with toxic and pharmacologic properties with cell physiology of cancer and non-cancer cells. He has a robust research background dealing with cell and molecular imaging, electrophysiology, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, molecular and cell biological techniques, has over 150 peer-reviewed original review articles and book chapters and is on the editorial board of several journals, including Breast Cancer Insights.
